How to Fix a Gas Oven That Isn’t Heating Properly

Your burners work fine, but the oven is another story. Food comes out pale and underdone, or one side burns while the other stays raw. A gas oven not heating properly is frustrating, especially mid-recipe, but the cause is usually one of a handful of common issues.

Let us work through what usually goes wrong with a gas oven, and how to put it right, most of it without calling anyone in.

First, a quick safety check

Before opening up or investigating anything, check for a gas smell. If you smell gas, do not light the oven, and do not keep trying. Turn off the gas and ventilate the room first. Our cooking gas safety guide covers what to do next. Only troubleshoot an oven once you are sure there is no gas smell.

The oven will not light at all

Check that gas is actually reaching the cooker first, the same basics as any burner. Is the cylinder low, the valve open, the regulator seated? If the burners work but the oven will not light, the oven’s own igniter or pilot may be the issue. Clean it gently and make sure it is dry. If it still will not catch, the oven’s gas port itself may need a proper look from a technician.

Why is my gas oven not heating properly?

This is one of the most common complaints, and often the least visible cause. A partially blocked oven burner restricts gas flow, so the flame is smaller than it should be. Turn off and cool the oven fully, then remove and clean the burner the same way you would a stovetop one, clearing the ports with a suitable brush. A weak, restricted flame simply cannot produce full heat.

Your thermostat may be reading wrong

Sometimes the flame is fine, but the dial is lying to you. Oven thermostats can drift out of accuracy over time, running hotter or cooler than the number shown. A simple oven thermometer placed inside tells you the truth. If there is a noticeable, consistent gap, you can adjust your baking temperatures to compensate, or have the thermostat checked and recalibrated.

Uneven heat, one side hot, one side not

This usually points to airflow rather than the flame itself. Check that nothing is blocking the back or sides of the oven cavity, since restricted airflow creates hot and cool pockets. Overcrowding the oven with too many trays has the same effect. Rotating your tray halfway through cooking is also a simple, practical fix while you sort out the root cause.

The oven door and seal matter more than you think

Heat escaping through a poor door seal is a quiet culprit. If the rubber gasket around the door is torn, flattened, or missing sections, hot air leaks out constantly, and the oven struggles to hold its set temperature. Check the seal by closing the door on a strip of paper, if it slides out with no resistance anywhere along the edge, the seal likely needs replacing.

When to call a technician

Some oven issues are not for guesswork. If the burner is clean, the door seals well, and it still will not heat properly, do not keep experimenting. The same goes for any persistent gas smell, or an igniter that sparks but never lights. A qualified technician can check the internal gas line and components safely.

Quick oven troubleshooting checklist

  • Check gas is reaching the cooker at all.
  • Clean the oven burner ports if the flame looks weak.
  • Test the actual temperature with an oven thermometer.
  • Check for blocked airflow or an overcrowded oven.
  • Inspect the door seal with the paper test.
  • Call a technician if the problem persists after checks.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my oven take so long to preheat?

Usually a weak flame from a dirty burner, or heat escaping through a worn door seal. Check both before assuming the oven itself is failing.

Is it normal for an oven thermostat to be inaccurate?

A small drift is common over time. A large, consistent gap between the dial and an oven thermometer is worth having checked.

Why is one side of my oven hotter than the other?

Most often blocked airflow or overcrowding. Give the hot air room to circulate, and rotate trays halfway through cooking as a simple fix.

Can I clean the oven burner myself?

Yes, the same way you would clean a stovetop burner, gas off, fully cooled, ports cleared gently. Our maintenance guide covers the full process.

Most oven heating problems trace back to a dirty burner, a worn seal, or a drifting thermostat, all fixable without a full replacement. Work through the checks in order, and your oven should be back to proper heat in no time.
